THE STORY OF MISS COKATO

The first Cokato queen was crowned in 1948.  At the time, the winner was called the Fire Queen.  The ceremony was always a major event, with entertainment, a talent contest, and in later years, music provided by the Corn Carnival Band.

Cokato Legion Post 209 sponsored the contest, held early each January, and continued to do so until 1986.  The ceremony then became part of the Corn Carnival, quickly becoming one of its most anticipated events.  The terraces in Peterson Park are filled to capacity for the ceremony.

Cokato’s queens take part in numerous celebrations in neighboring communities, appearing in almost two dozen parades.  They also enter the Minneapolis Aquatennial.  Shawna Bodenhammer (1996), Julianne Borg (2000), and Emily McConkey (2007) were crowned Aquatennial Princesses.  And Karen Erlandson (1966) and Sara Borg (1994) are Cokato queens who have been gone on to become Queen of the Lakes at the Aquatennial.
